Motivation and Aim
The study was born from a frustration with the way that many Artificial Intelligence (AI) based projects appear to have a tendency to start with high hopes and genuine innovation, but then falter and die before they reach the stage of being fielded as practical applications.
This study intends to gather information on real AI projects (successful and otherwise), supported by discussions with AI developers, researchers and managers. It is hoped that the results will identify whether there are issues that are specific to AI based systems, or issues that apply to the development of all IT based systems that are exacerbated by the use of AI techniques. It is hoped that analysis of the results will help to identify approaches and techniques that can help developers in avoiding the worst pitfalls in future developments.
This study is being led by Richard Ellis, founder of Stratum Management Ltd, and an active member of the UK Artificial Intelligence community. The research is non-commercial, and it is intended that the results will be made freely available. The interim results of this study will be discussed further at a workshop at AI-2003, the Conference of the British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Artificial Intelligence (SGAI), to be held in Cambridge UK in December 2003. Further details.
